Fort Santiago

Visit Fort Santiago, one of the oldest fortifications in Metro Manila and one of the most important historical sites in Manila. This citadel was originally built in 1571 by Spanish navigator and governor Miguel López de Legazpi for the newly established city of Manila in the Philippines. The defense fortress is located in Intramuros, the walled city of Manila.

For those who haven’t visited Fort Santiago lately, there are several new attractions inside worth visiting including a new cafe called Papakape situated inside Aljibe de la Fuerza, a 400-year-old water cistern.

Another interesting spot to visit inside Fort Santiago is the iMake History LEGO Fortress in Baluarte de Santa Barbara, which showcases Philippine landmarks recreated in LEGO.

Baluarte San Diego

See the famous circular fort and tower originally built from 1586-1587 to defend Manila’s southern bayside boundary. The circular fort was excavated in 1979 and the baluarte was restored by 1992. A garden was added at its base and the first stone fort in Manila is now an archeological park.

The garden area – which was once the site of a foundry and soldier’s barracks – is now rented out for private functions. The 16th century stone ruins provide a unique backdrop, while the fountain and pergola complete the perfect setting for special events and events.

Casa Manila Museum

Get a glimpse of the domestic life of 19th Century upper class families in the Philippines with a visit to Casa Manila Museum. This classic “Manila House” is a living museum that features the lifestyle of an affluent Filipino family during the late Spanish colonial period. The façade was patterned after a house that once stood at Jaboneros Street in the Chinese district of Binondo in the 1850’s.

The interior decor showcases furniture and furnishings sourced from Europe and China. Painted walls, crystal chandeliers, carved traceries, Chinese ceramics and gilded furniture shows the elegance and luxury of a 19th century Manila house.

Museo De Intramuros

Visit Museo de Intramuros and see Intramuros Administration’s vast ecclesiastical collection. The museum is located at the reconstructed San Ignacio Church and Convent within the historic walled area of Intramuros.
